Categorical Pathway (Traditional)

NRMP Track No. 1529320C0

3-year residency with up to two research elective months, one each in PGY2 and PGY3. There is no formal integration with a fellowship program in this track.

Eligibility: Graduates with an MD degree from diverse research backgrounds ranging from little or no formal research experience to those with significant research accomplishments wishing to further expand their skill set. Candidates must fulfill all eligibility requirements for the categorical Duke Pediatrics Residency Program.

Research Track—R38 SCI-StARR Pathway

4-year residency with 30 clinical months and 18 research months. Residents who wish to participate in the R38 SCI-StARR Pathway must apply internally to the program their intern year through a competitive application process. Upon acceptance to the program, participating residents must notify the American Board of Pediatrics within the first 9 months of the PGY-1 year. [Sample R38 Pathway Schedule]

Eligibility: This pathway is open to individuals with MD/PhD or DO/PhD degrees or MD/DO candidates who can demonstrate equivalent evidence of strong research experience and commitment. Candidates must fulfill all eligibility requirements for the categorical Duke Pediatrics Residency Program.

Fellowship Research Pathway

Clinical training and protected research time vary by pediatric sub-specialty. DPRS augments the existing Fellows Core Curriculum through its monthly seminar series and personalized assistance in identifying and applying for grant and fellowship funding. Candidates must fulfill all eligibility requirements for one of the Duke Pediatric Subspecialty Fellowship Programs.
