Congratulations to Samia Aleem, MD, who recently received a 2020 Fellows’ Clinical Research Award from the Society for Pediatric Research (SPR) for her abstract, entitled Assessing 3 Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Definitions: Associations between Room Air Challenge Results and Respiratory Outcomes.

The goal of the Children’s Health & Discovery initiative (CHDI) is to foster multidisciplinary and innovative research that will positively impact childhood and lifelong health.

The following are new and competing renewal awards made to faculty in the Department of Pediatrics through the month of March 2020. Please extend your congratulations to the following individuals.

Dr. Gabriela Maradiaga Panayotti and her family contracted COVID-19 simultaneously. After their full recoveries, Dr. Panayotti, an assistant professor in pediatrics in the Division of Primary Care and the Duke Healthy Lifestyles Program, is finding room for hope in this season and the beauty of Durham's community.

The only research activity allowed to continue is that addressing the root cause of our new normal: COVID-19, caused by the virus SARS-CoV2, a virus no one knew existed until four months before.

Each year the Department of Pediatrics distributes support for clinical, basic, or applied research projects proposed by investigators within the Duke Children’s community which is made possible by funds raised through Children's Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) programs and corporate partnerships in this area and generous donations from the Derfner Foundation. 

Adolescent Medicine Specialist Richard J. Chung, MD is one of the healthcare providers committed to caring for our community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's what he still finds beautiful despite the challenge.

Michael Cohen-Wolkowiez, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics in the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Quantitative Sciences, and Sallie Permar, MD, PhD, professor of pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases, are among nine faculty who have been recognized with Distinguished Professorships from the School of Medicine in 2020.

Jillian Hurst, PhD, was recently named Director of Research Initiatives for the Children’s Health and Discovery Initiative (CHDI).
