From March 2 to 6, 2020, the Duke Department of Pediatrics will celebrate its second annual literacy week. The celebration coincides with National Read Across America Day on March 2 in recognition of Dr. Seuss's birthday.

This week's Faculty Spotlight shines on Christoph Hornik, MD, PhD, MPH, associate professor of pediatrics in the Division of Critical Care Medicine, and chief of the Division of Quantitative Sciences.

The Resident Research Grants were created to prepare and mentor residents for careers in academic pediatrics, enhance departmental scholarly productivity, and provide support for residents to present their results at local, regional, and national meetings.

Duke University Hospital and the Department of Medicine are partnering to offer profile photo days open to all Duke Health providers, trainees, researchers, students, and anyone who needs an up-to-date professional head shot.  

A modified form of poliovirus, pioneered at Duke Cancer Institute as a therapy for glioblastoma brain tumors, appears in laboratory studies to also have applicability for pediatric brain tumors when used as part of a cancer vaccine.

Congratulations to Pediatrics Residents Amy Berkman, MD, and Lee McDaniel, MD, who received R38 grants through the Duke SCI-StARR program and the Duke Office of Physician Scientist Development (OSPD).

The Department of Pediatrics Research Retreat will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 from 11:30 am to 5:30 pm. This annual event offers the opportunity for students, postdoctoral fellows, clinical fellows, residents, research assistants, research associates, research scientists and faculty members in the department to engage in collaborative discussions and showcase current research.
