A pediatric stem cell transplant cures boy with rare genetic disease
Sebastian Sancho seemed perfectly healthy when he was born in the spring of 2012. Within two months, however, he was diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a rare and serious genetic disorder that left his immune system unable to fight infection. His only hope for a cure was a stem cell transplant.
Faculty Spotlight: Talal Imad Mousallem, MD
For Talal Mousallem, MD, the call to medicine came at an early age. Interestingly, he grew up Lebanon during the Lebanese civil war, and his great grandfather, grandfather and uncle were all physicians, who graduated from the same medical school.
Duke Pediatrics takes home the bronze
In 2019, the Duke Safe Sleep Task Force was formed. This group of physicians and nurses from across all pediatric units at Duke University Hospital (DUH) came together to focus on the safe sleep of patients under one year old.

An investigational treatment pioneered by a Duke Health pediatrician resulted in a one-year survival rate of 77% among children born with a rare condition in which they lack an immune system.
