Sebastian Sancho seemed perfectly healthy when he was born in the spring of 2012. Within two months, however, he was diagnosed with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a rare and serious genetic disorder that left his immune system unable to fight infection. His only hope for a cure was a stem cell transplant.

For Talal Mousallem, MD, the call to medicine came at an early age. Interestingly, he grew up Lebanon during the Lebanese civil war, and his great grandfather, grandfather and uncle were all physicians, who graduated from the same medical school.

In 2019, the Duke Safe Sleep Task Force was formed. This group of physicians and nurses from across all pediatric units at Duke University Hospital (DUH) came together to focus on the safe sleep of patients under one year old.​

The School of Medicine announced on July 22, 2021, that COVID-19 vaccinations are mandated for all faculty and staff, regardless of work location, and for non-Duke vendors, contract and temporary workers.

An investigational treatment pioneered by a Duke Health pediatrician resulted in a one-year survival rate of 77% among children born with a rare condition in which they lack an immune system.
