CHDI announces Child Health Equity Program awardees

The Duke Children’s Health and Discovery Initiative (CHDI) is pleased to announce the CHDI-CTSI Child Health Equity Program awardees. The goal of the Child Health Equity Program is to support projects that identify and develop strategies to mitigate disparities and inequities in child health outcomes and healthcare access within Duke University Health System and the surrounding communities, to build capacity for child health equity research, and to improve access to and quality of care. The program was designed in collaboration with the Duke Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute’s Integrating Special Populations Core and an advisory board that includes investigators, providers, representatives from community organizations, and patient representatives. Funding for the program was provided through the Translating Duke Health Initiative. 

Four project teams were selected for funding ranging from $50,000-$300,000, including funding for community partners:

Project Title: El Faro: Addressing Mental Health Inequities among Latinx Children with ADHD in Durham

Investigators: John Mitchell, Naomi Davis, Rachel Dew, Julia Schecter

Community Partner: El Futuro

Goal: To close the gap in ADHD treatment inequities among Latinx families.


Project Title: Duke-Reinvestment Partners Healthy Homes Breathe Easy Community Collaborative

Investigators: Jason Lang, Kate Hoffman, Cindy Green, Zeni Scott, Nikki Koutlas

Community Partner: Reinvestment Partners

Goal: To improve asthma outcomes in disadvantaged families struggling to limit in-home exposures for children with severe asthma.


Project Title: Bridging the Gap: Addressing social determinants of health to improve care delivery and outcomes following prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease

Investigators: McAllister Windom, Kevin Hill, Sharla Rent, Stephen Miller, Meredeth Sooy-Mossey, Lillian Kang Andrea Diaz Stransky, Christoph Hornik, Renee Leverty, Sarah Ellestad, Maria Small, Corenthian “Corey” Booker, Dylan Thibault, Riley Yang, Carla Dominguez Gonzales, Caitlin Georgas, Angela Osborne, Lydia Monk, Kayla Dickson, Demetris West, Stormi Covington, Liz Simpler

Community Partners: NC DHHS, the Heart 2 Heart Collaborative, and Postpartum Support International

Goal: To reduce race- and ethnicity-related disparities in health outcomes for children born with congenital heart disease in North Carolina.


Project Title: Sleep Regularity to Advance Youth Health Equity: Contextual Pathways and Community Voices

Investigators: Jessica Lunsford-Avery, Naomi Duke, Matthew Engelhard, Julia Schecter, Michelle White

Community Partners: Durham Children’s Initiative and Durham Public Schools

Goal: To promote adolescent health equity by developing community- and family-informed interventions to enhance sleep regularity.
