Kathleen Wurth Bartlett, MD, FAAP, professor of pediatrics, chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine, and associate program director of the Pediatrics Residency Program, has been named vice chair for faculty, effective November 1, 2022. In this position, she will specifically focus on mentoring faculty at all levels, targeting opportunities for leadership and career growth, and selecting career priorities that will facilitate academic promotion.
After receiving a medical doctorate at Duke University School of Medicine, Dr. Bartlett completed residency training in pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine where she was also chief resident. She came to Duke in 2004 as a clinical associate in the Department of Pediatrics and was named chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine in 2017. She has also served as an associate program director for the Pediatrics Residency Program since 2008.
A dedicated leader, Dr. Bartlett is passionate about promoting the careers of our faculty and has mentored numerous faculty and trainees and served on numerous departmental committees that address education administration and curriculum and leadership development.
Notably, for her excellence and commitment to teaching and mentoring, Dr. Bartlett received the Samuel L. Katz Faculty Teaching Award in 2018, an award given by Pediatric house staff to recognize the most influential faculty member in their training. She was also recognized with the Denny, Katz, Simon, Tingelstad Academic Service Award from the North Carolina Pediatric Society this year for her service as interim residency program director during the first year of the pandemic.
Dr. Bartlett’s impressive strengths as a clinician, educator and mentor make her the ideal leader for our departmental faculty development program, and we are fortunate that she will be serving in this new role. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Bartlett to her new leadership position.
Dr. Bartlett succeeds Mara Becker, MD, MSCE, who served as vice chair for faculty for the Department of Pediatrics from 2019 to 2022. Dr. Becker currently serves as vice dean for faculty, focusing on faculty professionalism initiatives in the Duke University School of Medicine.
