Pediatrics residents can apply to participate in an 8-week global health clinical elective program during training at Duke. The global health clinical elective program is a multi-disciplinary program, supported in conjunction with the Hubert Yeargan Center (HYC) for global health at Duke.
The elective program includes a longitudinal didactic lecture series on global health, led by Duke faculty, in addition to an 8-week clinical elective during 3rd year of Pediatrics training at one of our longstanding global partner sites:
- Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya
- Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza, Tanzania
- Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in Moshi, Tanzania
- Karapitya Hospital in Galle, Sri Lanka
- Hospital Regional de Loreto in Iquitos, Peru
- Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico (US)
Additionally, Pediatrics residents participating in the Global Health Clinical Elective participate in a longitudinal, multidisciplinary global health curriculum throughout their 3rd year. The curriculum series includes ~6–8 didactic and debriefing sessions led by Duke global health faculty and focuses on core topics in global health and health equity. Residents participate alongside trainees from a range of Duke residency programs—including Internal Medicine, Medicine-Pediatrics, Medicine-Psychiatry, Neurology, OB/Gyn, Family Medicine, and Radiology—creating a unique opportunity to learn across disciplines, share perspectives, and explore global health challenges from multiple clinical and health-system perspectives.
