The primary mission of the fellowship program is to train the next generation of pediatric hospitalists by providing robust clinical and research training within an innovative and supportive educational environment. Fellows will become experts in caring for a variety of acute and chronic conditions in children hospitalized in both tertiary and community settings; develop proficiency in core skills and procedures essential to the care of hospitalized children; become future leaders in hospital administration, high value and quality-driven healthcare; and drive the field forward through independent and innovative scholarly investigation in areas such as quality improvement, medical education, child advocacy, patient safety, care for children with medical complexity and health disparities research. Fellows will work closely with a variety of staff including nutritionists, nurses, social workers, pathologists, radiologists, surgeons among many other medical subspecialists at Duke University Medical Center.

Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) is a nationally-recognized academic medical center with superb clinical experiences and laboratory resources along with an intellectual environment that is supportive and conducive to the development of an academic career. The medical center includes Duke University Hospital, a tertiary and quaternary care hospital, which is consistently rated as one of the top hospitals in the United States. DUMC is a vibrant, interactive, scientific community where ideas are actively discussed and exchanged among scientists with basic science and clinical research expertise, providing the opportunity for true multi-disciplinary clinical care and research. 

Our fellows primarily train at Duke Children’s Hospital, which is consistently ranked as one of the Best Children's Hospitals in the nation and currently accommodates approximately 7,000 annual admissions and has 198 inpatient beds, including a 67-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 16-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 20-bed Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and a 16-bed Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit (the largest in the world). The McGovern-Davison Children's Health Center is located adjacent to the hospital and serves as the site for ambulatory pediatric subspecialty care, with approximately 70,000 annual visits with multiple  primary care sites spread throughout the community.

The Duke Division of Hospital Medicine consists of 12 full-time faculty who are active in clinical care, medical education, research and child advocacy. The division provides high quality, patient- and family-centered care for a diverse population of pediatric patients in the state of North Carolina as well as patients referred from all over the nation and the world. The experience of our service ranges from complicated presentations of common diseases to the unique problems seen at a tertiary and quaternary medical center. Our faculty and staff direct several robust clinical services, including the intermediate inpatient General Pediatric units, Pediatric Complex Care, and Moderate Sedation. Faculty serve in multiple leadership roles within medical education, including direction of the pediatric medical student clerkship, the pediatric sub-internship program, pediatric core residency program, and the medicine-pediatrics residency program. We lead quality improvement training and initiatives for the department, and conduct grant-funded clinical and education research. Finally, we are leaders in several justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives for the department and the School of Medicine.
