The Division of Infectious Diseases is dedicated to improving the health of children by promoting excellence in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of infectious diseases through clinical care, education, research, and advocacy.

Our faculty hold key leadership positions across the School of Medicine, including the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI), the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI), the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) and the Duke Center for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention (DCASIP).

Our Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship program has been educating the next generation of infectious disease specialists for over 50 years. We are also actively involved in the education of medical students and residents, and we are proud to have been repeatedly honored with the Arena-Palumbo Division Teaching Award, which recognizes our commitment to resident education.

Our faculty conduct groundbreaking research on a variety of topics, including pediatric pharmacokinetics, vaccine development and clinical trials, global health, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and the role of the human microbiome in infectious diseases.

Patient Care For the Entire Community

We offer comprehensive consultative services for inpatients at Duke University Hospital. Our transplant infectious diseases service provides specialized care for children with cancer and organ transplant recipients. Our active outpatient clinic serves the Triangle area and treats common outpatient infectious diseases such as congenital infections, bone and joint infections, and cases of unexplained fevers in children.
