Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I wanted a residency program at a large academic center but with a close knit residency program, and at Duke you definitely get both! In just one month I have seen such a large range of patients, from rare and complex to standard pediatrics bread and butter, because Duke is such a high volume hospital center. However, all the attendings, program leadership, and residents are extremely down to earth and lovely to talk to, so I feel like I'm learning so much in a non-intimidating setting. My medium-sized class has been able to get together and explore Durham (thanks COVID vaccines!) and I feel like I already have found some lifelong best friends!!

About Duke and Durham

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
Figure out what you want to prioritize before planning to check out places! If you want to live close to the hospital (e.g. me with my seven minute commute :))) there are tons of options nearby. If you want to live downtown, so you're close to most of the restaurants/bars people like to go after work, there are also many (slightly more pricey) options! Or if suburbia is your thing, there are lots of cute neighborhoods to consider, and also easy options if you need to live between Chapel Hill and Durham. Feel free to email me with any moving to Durham questions you may have!!

What do you like to do outside of work?
Hang out with co-residents and not talk about work!! We've explored tons of breweries, restaurants, and outdoor places in our time together. Our class is pretty open to trying different activities--from dancing in downtown Raleigh to chilling by Falls Lake, we really love to socialize for wellness :)
