Reflections on the Duke Program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
Duke really checked off all the boxes I was looking for in a residency program! I was looking for a medium-sized program that was small enough that I could really get to know my co-residents and have a close-knit feel, while also being large enough that things like cross-coverage wouldn't be an issue. I also wanted to be at an academic center that would take care of a large, diverse patient population. Above all, I wanted a program that really cared for and supported its residents, which has definitely been my experience since coming to Duke!

About Duke and Durham

What’s best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
There's so much to do here! There are tons of local breweries and amazing restaurants. There are also plenty of trails for hiking, running, and biking for anyone who loves to spend time outside. For beach days or water sports there are a few local lakes. Best of all, everything is super easy to get to. There's plenty of stuff within a 20 minute drive, which makes it easy to plan fun things to do on days off!

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
I would suggest thinking about what type of community you want to live in! One of the great things about Durham is that there is a variety of neighborhoods to choose from, whether that's downtown in an apartment, a house within city limits, or further out in the suburbs. I wanted to be a short drive to the hospital while still being walking distance to shops and restaurants, so I found that downtown was the best choice for me. Overall, Durham is a pretty affordable place to live so there's flexibility when choosing your home!
