Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking first and foremost for good vibes. Residency is hard and I knew no matter where I went it would be hard. So, I was looking for a place where the residents seemed close to each other and enjoyed spending time together outside of work. In addition, I wanted a place that was going to see lots of things so that I would be the most well rounded. I have found some of my best friends here and have taken care of some pretty awesome kiddos with some pretty unique medical conditions!

What are the strengths of the Duke Program?

It is a medium sized program with "large sized program" volume. Basically we have a small enough group that we are able to get to know each other, but we are also seeing a large amount of patients with unique medical conditions that makes it feel bigger. We are a place where patients get transferred to so we are able to see patients from all over the state or country not just limited to the Triangle. Our program director and co-residents are also awesome, which obviously helps a lot. It is nice to have a program where the people you work with every day are also the people you wanna see outside of the hospital too. There is also so much to get involved with in research if that is what you are into!

About Duke and Durham

What’s best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
It is so easy to live here! Everything is pretty close to each other. Its small enough that you can have local type of feel but big enough where you can explore new places all the time. Durham is also close to Raleigh and chapel hill so you can get different vibes from different places. I definitely spend less living here than I did in Atlanta where I lived before. I live less than 10 minutes from the hospital which is incredibly convenient after a long shift. It has good trails for walking (or running if you are into that) but also fun events that are easy to get to either downtown or close by!

What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to watch sports and read, which the whole residency knows about. I am a big social butterfly and socialize multiple times a week and enjoy planning events that we can all get together for. The most recent kick has been trivia with all the classes for whoever can join! – “Go Dawgs!”
