Reflections on the Duke program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a medium-sized residency program with an ethos that aligned with my priority of training in a holistic, collaborative, and supportive environment. Knowing that residency training is grueling no matter where you end up, I prioritized finding a program whose residents and faculty worked together with an obvious sense of warmth and camaraderie, where I knew I would be supported, valued, and encouraged to grow both as a pediatrician and also as a person. I also wanted to be in a location and healthcare system that, while not necessarily being massive, still had the volume, diversity, and resources to ensure I would get exposure to both bread and butter pediatrics and rare, fascinating pathology. Lastly, I really wanted to escape New England winters and be closer to family. Duke checked all those boxes (and more!) and easily felt like the right fit for me.
About Duke University and Durham
What’s the best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
What I love the most about this area is that it has so many appealing conveniences of a bigger city - like amazing food, breweries, and quirky entertainment - while still being beautifully green and feeling very laid back. Also, gorgeous parks and trails are very easily accessible on weekends and days off!
Personal interests
What do you like to do outside of work?
Explore beaches and lakes to swim and watch the sunset; watch stand-up comedy; find things to cook in my cast-iron pan; read a random array of non-fiction and modern-historical fiction; and hang out with my two siamese cats.
