Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
When looking at programs, I wanted to find an academic center with a medium-ish sized program where learning how to care for complex cases was part of the norm but also still had plenty of the bread and butter pediatrics to be comfortable anywhere I go. A place where you have plenty of colleagues that are supportive, but not so big that it took you all three years to finally get chance to get to know everyone. I was looking for a program where your fellow residents were also a family.

About Duke University and Durham

What’s the best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
This is a dog loving community with too many great restaurants to count. There is such diversity of food everywhere you look, and plenty of breweries to take your dogs with you, too. You would be hard pressed to find a location that has such access to many fun activities outside, with short drives to many great beaches, hiking trails, rivers, and lakes.

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
Get here as early as you can before you start and explore so many of the great restaurants, farmer's markets, breweries, and find wherever you can go have fun with your favorite outdoor activity because I bet you can find it here, too.

Personal interests

What do you like to do outside of work?
Whenever I'm outside the hospital, I like to take my two Huskies everywhere I go outside of work, usually to the beach, river, or on a hike. I enjoy going to new restaurants and discovering the current local craft beer on tap with friends.
