What are the strengths of your training program?
The faculty within the Allergy and Immunology help foster an excellent learning environment. From day one, they've wanted to know my learning goals and what the program can do to help support them. They've provided the space for me to explore different research opportunities, and the ability to customize my experience to my clinical interests. Additionally they love to teach and include learners in their research and are a lot of fun to work with! I cannot overstate their genuine interest in helping me develop as a clinician and research. Overall I think this program can help support a variety of candidates, wherever their clinical and research interests lie.

Duke is a regional referral center for many primary immunodeficiencies, as well as the only national referral center for athymia, which leads to a large volume of immunology, which we can see from initial diagnosis to definitive therapy, in close coordination with our bone marrow transplant team. In addition to these rare diseases, we get a great volume of allergic diseases during our outpatient rotations. We get a good balance of the rare with the common.

How are you involved in research? What are your research interests?
My interests lie in researching inborn errors of immunity. I'm seeking academic opportunities after fellowship that allow me to continue clinical and translational research in this domain, in addition to clinical trials.

During my first year I presented two immunology case presentations at national conferences. During my second year I have three projects planned. I am working with Dr. Niraj Patel on a subcutaneous immunoglobulin clinical trial at Duke. I am working with Dr. John Sleasman to analyze outcomes of patients that received bone marrow transplant prior to receiving thymus implantation and manifestations and treatment of autoimmunity prior to receiving thymus implantation. Finally, I've received a community grant from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology to establish a national registry for carriers of X-linked chronic granulomatous disease and my primary mentor on this project is Dr. Niraj Patel.

How do you spend your time outside of work?
My two kids (1 and 3 years old), two dogs and wife keep me busy! We like to go hiking around our house in Haw River, hanging out at our neighborhood pool and my wife and I enjoy attempting to bake our favorite bakes from The Great British Bake Off. I also am part of a local masters swim team and enjoy running half marathons.
