Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a medium-sized program with a close-knit group of residents that provides great mentorship, has a good balance of primary care and subspecialty training, emphasizes teaching, effectively prepares its trainees for life after residency, and is in a location with plenty of things to do without being an overwhelmingly large city.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The greatest strength is the people--the residents, faculty, and staff are all so supportive, kind, and make you feel valued as an individual. Outside of that, Duke offers so many opportunities to pursue whatever specific interests you may have, whether that's research, teaching, QI, etc; has a great mix of bread-and-butter pediatrics and zebras; has a unique every-other night shift schedule; serves a diverse community and emphasizes diversity and inclusion; and provides excellent teaching during morning report, noon conference, and during clinical duties.

About Duke and Durham

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
Start looking for housing early and move as soon as possible to give yourself plenty of time to explore the Triangle.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and 2 dogs, trying new restaurants in the Triangle, going to Durham Bulls games, exercising, playing board games with friends, and watching UNC sports (yes, it is possible to be a Carolina fan even while working at Duke).
