Anas Kayoum, MBBS, is the 2021-2022 Matthew F. Sullivan Advanced Pediatric Cardiology Fellow at Duke University Medical Center, sponsored by Hands for Hearts. He is training in the Duke Pediatric Electrophysiology fellowship program to acquire expertise in caring for infants, children, and adolescents with disorders of heart rhythm. Dr. Kayoum graduated from the University of Sana’a - Faculty of Medicine in Yemen for his MBBS degree. He completed internship and pediatric residency training, followed by a year in pediatric cardiology fellowship at Hamad General Hospital in Qatar. To achieve his goal of becoming a pediatric electrophysiologist, he moved to the U.S. in 2015 and completed a three-year pediatric residency at Mount Sinai / Elmhurst program in New York. He then relocated to Miami and completed a three-year pediatric cardiology fellowship at Miami (Nicklaus) Children’s Hospital.
In 2021, Dr. Kayoum moved to Durham, North Carolina to start a one-year advanced fellowship in pediatric electrophysiology at Duke. In this program, he is being trained to diagnose and treat rhythm disorders in children and adults with and without the most complex forms of congenital heart disease. He is training to perform the most advanced techniques including catheter ablation and implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators. Additionally, he is learning to care for children and families with rare genetic disorders causing life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Following his training, Dr. Kayoum plans to return to his wife and children in Qatar and use his acquired expertise to care for children in Qatar and across the Middle East.
