Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a strong, academic residency program with a relatively smaller class size (more of a family feel) in a desirable city to live in and I found all of that in Duke. It was the only program that I texted my wife in the middle of interview day saying that we have to go here!

About Duke and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Durham is an incredible city to live in! It takes 15 minutes or less to go anywhere so if you're coming from a big city where it takes 30 minutes to drive one mile, this is a huge quality of life improvement! Also the restaurant and brewery scene here is superb and nearly everything is dog friendly. If you enjoy nature, there's a ton to do right around the city and the beach and mountains are just a couple hours away!

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
I would highly recommend picking up a puppy on your move to Durham, so your first night in the city can be spent on an air mattress in your kitchen with a howling puppy. In all seriousness, I would suggest to move to Durham a couple weeks before orientation starts so you have time to settle in and explore the area before work kicks in.

Personal interests

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside the hospital, I love hanging out with my wife and dog going hiking or fishing (ideally both!). And on Saturdays during football season, you can find me watching football (go Badgers!) with something on the grill.

What is something interesting/surprising about you?
I used to guide fly fishing and white water rafting trips in Colorado/Montana, and I am looking forward to checking out the mountain rivers here in NC!
