REFLECTIONS ON THE DUKE PROGRAM

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program with a great atmosphere between residents and attendings, and ultimately that would provide a wonderful, well-rounded education! I really appreciate how Duke has so many clinical experiences, as well as possibly hundreds of unique research opportunities. I believe Duke will prepare me especially well for both a potential fellowship or career in primary care. Also, the program leadership genuinely cares about us as people and is approachable and kind, and everyone I’ve met (residents, attendings, APP’s, and more) has been supportive and welcoming!

Mentorship is also something important to me, and I felt like Duke would be a program where I could build relationships with multiple mentors from diverse backgrounds.

What do you want to get involved in at Duke that particularly interests you?
As someone leaning towards a subspecialty but undecided about which one I’d be interested in, I’m grateful that Duke has such diverse clinical opportunities! In just the first two months of residency, I’ve seen a wide variety of specialties and have much more insight into possible career paths. Duke is also a leader in pediatric research and there are many opportunities to be involved. Lastly, I enjoy medical education and hope to learn how to better teach medical students, and teach (and learn from!) my co-residents.

MORE ABOUT THE RESIDENT

What are you looking forward to most about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I love that the Triangle has so much to offer, including spending time outside, a great food scene, and also plenty to do indoors! The weather is wonderful, and by far the best part is the people. It’s been special getting to know my co-residents – they are genuinely kind, encouraging, a ton of fun, and I really enjoy doing things with them. It’s also special to be closer to family and some old friends.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with Jesus, as well as getting together with new and old friends, including meeting for dinner, going to events, or just hanging out! My faith is a wonderful part of my life, and I love times of worship, being with friends in the local Christian community, and quiet movements with my friend and Savior. I also enjoy almost anything that’s outdoors! You’ll often find me walking in a park, on the pickleball or tennis courts, or playing board games with friends. I also enjoy singing (although not necessarily very skillfully..) and am hoping to learn guitar!
