Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
Great people and Duke delivered! My co-residents, the fellows, faculty, and other support and medical staff are the best part. I feel so lucky to have such a helpful group of co-trainees around me. We spend a lot of time together both inside and outside of the hospital. My partner appreciates the community residency has provided as we didn’t know very many people when we moved from Las Vegas. He has been inducted as a fellow “resident” amongst my class and coordinates anything sports related including fantasy football leagues and March Madness brackets.

What do you want to get involved in at Duke that particularly interests you (i.e. committees, research, interest groups, QI, etc.)?
If you are interested in something you can find it at Duke. For me, I am interested in medical education as well as pediatric hematology-oncology and critical care medicine. I have been able to join interest groups as well as DPRS (Duke Pediatric Research Scholars) to pursue my interests. One of the benefits of being tied to an academic center is the vast network it provides. I also have joined a quality improvement group working on providing evidenced-based care to patients being admitted with bronchiolitis.

About Duke and Durham

What’s best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The food and outdoors are my favorite parts. On my days off I like to try new restaurants, bars or breweries with friends, go to a farmer’s market, or take my dog on a hike along the Eno River. Isaac's is a favorite spot and worth the wait around the block - yes, the rumors are true, you can find an amazing bagel outside of the North East. My dog is a big fan of Durham and loves how dog friendly the city is. I also like to take my paddle board out to the local lakes. It is also great that we are so close to so many beautiful mountain ranges as well as the beach. Camping is available in Durham as well as a quick car ride away.
