REFLECTIONS ON THE DUKE PROGRAM

What were you looking for in a residency program?
When looking for a residency program, I wanted to find a place that would challenge me to grow while supporting me throughout the process. I was looking for a program with more opportunities than I could ever need; opportunities to learn, explore my interests, take on new challenges, and discover the kind of pediatrician I wanted to become. I wanted to learn from approachable faculty who were invested in my growth and have mentorship that was not something I would have to seek out, but rather something that was consistently available. Clinically, I hoped to train somewhere I would see a wide variety of pediatric pathology, allowing me to build the confidence and skills to care for whatever might walk through my doors as an attending. Beyond clinical training, I was searching for a program rooted in kindness, friendship, and genuine support. During my interview with Duke, I immediately noticed there was no sense of hierarchy between residents and faculty; instead, there was a strong sense of mutual respect and collaboration. It was clear that the faculty not only wanted their residents to succeed, but were willing to stand beside them, guide them through difficult moments, and celebrate their successes along the way. I was drawn to the feeling that everyone genuinely cared about one another, both as physicians and as people. Ultimately, I wanted to leave residency not only feeling prepared, but also grateful for the people who helped me get there. I felt that this was a place where I could reach my full potential while never having to do it alone.

What do you like to do outside of work?
I taught myself how to bake bread in medical school and enjoy having something fresh to eat after long shifts. My go-to is a simple 3 ingredient loaf, the fan favorite is my focaccia, and I also enjoy making seasonal loaves around then holidays.

If I am with 3 or more people, I will be playing Catan. I love how no matter where you start on the board, you can always find a strategy to win!

I love to deep-clean and organize my house when I have the time - I know it sounds silly but nothing feels better than relaxing in a clean house!
