REFLECTIONS ON THE DUKE PROGRAM
What were you looking for in a residency program?
There were three main things I was looking for in a program: 1) co-residents who were close-knit and good people, 2) supportive faculty who would help me learn how to take excellent care of children and families and 3) a breadth and variety of patients and families to learn from and care for. Having seen the program up close as a med student, I knew Duke Peds had all three. Even more importantly, I knew the people in this program really cared about my well-being and having a good life outside of the hospital.
What do you want to get involved in at Duke that particularly interests you?
I am interested in medical education and am excited to learn how to be a teacher on the wards from the senior residents and faculty. I currently do research in family-centered communication in the NICU, and hope to apply these qualitative research techniques to different areas within pediatrics. Career-wise, I think I'm interested in PEM!
MORE ABOUT THE RESIDENT
What are you looking forward to most about living in Durham and the Triangle?
I love living here! There are always new restaurants and breweries to try. Some of my favorite newer spots in Durham are Fonda Lupita (delicious Mexican food), Atomic Clock Brewery (great outdoor patio to meet up with friends) and The Common Market (incredible sandwiches and coffee shop).
What do you like to do outside of work?
I play a ton of tennis, and the weather is good enough here that you can play year-round on any of the public teams! Outside of that, you can usually find me, my husband, and our 2-year-old labradoodle on a walk in Duke Forest or cheering on the Durham Bulls (our AAA baseball team).
What is something interesting/surprising about you?
My first job ever was selling hot dogs at the local ball park in Vermont!
