Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a residency program that offered a high clinical volume, a wide variety of pathologies, and most importantly, a strong bond among the residents! I was fortunate to complete a sub-internship in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Duke as a fourth-year medical student. During that time, I witnessed just how close-knit the residents were. It truly felt like a second family. The friendships I made during residency have lasted far beyond training...I even had three of my co-residents as bridesmaids in my wedding!

What do you want to get involved in at Duke that particularly interests you?
When I started at Duke, I had a strong interest in pediatric cardiology and was eager to get involved in research. Through the Duke Pediatric Research Scholars (DPRS) program, I was able to find a mentor who helped guide me in establishing a project and working on a manuscript. Being new to the area, I also wanted to connect with the local community. One of the most meaningful experiences I had was joining Project ADAM—a national initiative focused on improving sudden cardiac arrest response and AED accessibility in schools and community centers.

About Duke and Durham

What’s best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The Triangle is a great place to live! The weather is beautiful year-round, offering just enough of each season without the harsh winters I was used to in the Northeast. I love being able to spend time outdoors for most of the year. And if you ask my husband—an avid UNC basketball fan—he’d say the best part of living here is being in a community where college basketball is a way of life!

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy visiting all the different coffee shops, restaurants and breweries in the Triangle. I love working out at SolidCore (which recently moved to Downtown Durham!) and attending Thursday night trivia. I especially enjoy spending time with my co-residents and fellows outside of the hospital whether its Sunday night dinners, Catan game nights, or a Durham Bulls game. Oh and if you come to Durham, you must try the Oysters at Seraphines!
