What are the strengths of your training program?
- Excellent mentorship, both personally and professionally
- Program seems to do a great job meeting fellows where they’re at and helping you create an individualized curriculum that supports your professional goals and passions within Pediatrics
- Large Med-Peds presence within the Pediatric Hospital Medicine division and major research and educational focus in pediatric to adult transitions
- Many opportunities for research and extracurricular activities in Medical Education and Healthcare Advocacy
- Complex Care inpatient team and outpatient services within Pediatrics, Med-Peds Inpatient Team on Internal Medicine, and Med-Peds staffed transitions consult service that spans both adult and children’s hospitals
- Opportunities to moonlight and take on teaching and other responsibilities that are financially compensated, both within Pediatrics and Internal Medicine
How are you involved in research? What are your research interests?
- My major interests within medicine are pediatric to adult transitions of care for medically complex adolescents, quality improvement, medical education and trainee mentorship, and healthcare advocacy for vulnerable patients, especially non-English speaking patients and refugees.
- Current research projects include:
- A medical education project: specifically, I will be developing asynchronous, microlearning content for residents that focuses on pediatric to adult transitions topics.
- My primary research project is still in the development phase, but I plan to design a project that combines several of the above interests. Specifically, I anticipate that this will take the form of a quality improvement project focused on improving pediatric to adult transitions for medically complex adolescents, especially in the inpatient setting at Duke.
- I plan to assist with a few other projects that evaluate the impact of the new Gen Med 18 (Med-Peds directed, transition-focused) consult service on both patients and rotating trainees
How do you spend your time outside of work?
Spending time with my husband, especially exploring the delicious restaurants, coffee shops, and many running, hiking, and biking trails around Durham and the Triangle area, traveling both within the US and abroad, camping (especially in the North Carolina State and National Parks), and relaxing at home with our two goofy, but lovable cats!
