Study Finds No Advantage in Combining Surfactant and Steroids for Preemies

Duke was part of NICHD Neonatal Research Network’s multicenter trial that tested the efficacy of using surfactant plus steroids in premature babies vs surfactant alone. This combination looked promising in smaller studies, but the Network’s pivotal trial found that the combination did not lead to improved outcomes, and could potentially have increased risk for adverse outcomes. The study, co-authored by Michael Cotten, MD, MHS, was in JAMA on 9/30.
