Department of Pediatrics Launches the Health Equity and Advocacy Leadership (HEAL) Track

At the beginning of 2024, the Department of Pediatrics launched the application for the department's first Health Equity and Advocacy Leadership (HEAL) Track for Pediatric residents. We received many applications from first- year pediatric residents and five residents, passionate about health equity and advocacy within Pediatric medicine, were selected as the Inaugural HEAL resident cohort.

The two-year track that will begin September 2024 is led by:

  • Larissa Truschel MD, MPH who serves as the Director and Co-Founder and is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician
  • Jasmine Willis-Wallace, Ed.D., MS who serves as the Associate Director and Co-Founder and is the Vice Chair for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for the Department of Pediatrics
  • Mia Mallory, MD, M.Ed. who serves as the Pediatrics Residency Director and is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician,

This track will develop leaders in advocacy and health equity to reduce health disparities in Pediatrics. Participants will:

  • Develop a better understanding of the social determinants of health and health disparities in our surrounding community and beyond
  • Be better equipped with skills and tools to be child health advocates as pediatricians
  • Engage with community stakeholders to understand local resources and partnerships
  • Be exposed to careers in Pediatrics that focus on health disparities research, scholarship, and advocacy
  • Engage in self-reflective learning that will encourage professional identity formation, empathy, cultural humility

Congratulations to our Inaugural HEAL resident cohort!
