Debra Best, MD, associate professor of pediatrics in the Division of Primary Care, and Elizabeth Erickson, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics in the Division of Primary Care, have received a grant from The Duke Endowment to develop new methods for screening and early interventions in primary care. The project brings together a team of investigators from the Children's Health and Discovery Initiative (CHDI) and the Duke Department of Pediatrics to develop a tiered screening framework for primary care that utilizes a combination of universal evidence-based screening tools, targeted additional screening, and biomarker assays to streamline the identification of children at highest risk of experiencing health effects of toxic stress. Additionally, the team will create a graduated response strategy that is targeted to risk level and that will deploy interventions in both the primary care setting and in referrals to community-based services.
