Ashley Dellenger has been working in the Department of Pediatrics for just over three years, and is currently a grants and contracts administrator. Each day, she provides excellent service to department faculty, managing all aspects of grants, including pre-award, post-award, and close-out. Faculty who work with her are highly complimentary of her efficiency, accuracy, and commitment, and they appreciate the work that she does!
What made you decide to come to Duke? How long have you been working here?
Since I was maybe 14, I’ve always had some sort of job or volunteering position at Duke (junior volunteer, working in Dr. Markert’s lab for a summer, then working in the gift shops). Once I graduated college and was looking for jobs, Duke was one of the first places I applied. I have been at Duke as a full-time employee for five and a half years with just over three of those being in Pediatrics.
What are your responsibilities within the department?
I am a grants and contracts administrator which means that I handle grants/contracts from cradle to grave. I help with: the creation of the budget, making sure that all budget items are accurate and allowable, the managing of the grant once awarded by keeping track of the budget, making any necessary changes to effort or budget and any documents requested by the sponsor, and closing out the grant/contract at the end of the project period.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy hearing about the outcomes of the work that these grants fund. I don’t understand much of the science, but when a faculty member tells you how excited a foundation is going to be at what they have done with the grant funding, I don’t have to know science to know that great work is being done.
What’s one thing about you that most people don’t know?
I’ve been on the big screen and on TV. I was an extra in two episodes of "One Tree Hill" and was an extra for "The Conjuring." I hate scary movies, but I had to see this one in theaters!
What passions or hobbies do you have outside of the department?
One of the things I love doing outside of work is travelling and watching TV/movies. The production aspect of TV/movies is fascinating to me and has been the main reason for my travels as I’ll go visit locations and watch the filming of my favorite shows.
