Duke Children's and the Duke Department of Pediatrics and its residency training programs are committed to the safety and well-being of all children, regardless of background or circumstance. Because of this non-partisan commitment to all children, we stand against recent border enforcement actions that have separated asylum-seeking families and put children into detention. These types of experiences are known causes of toxic stress among vulnerable children and are likely to have direct negative consequences throughout their lives. We stand with the American Academy of Pediatrics in opposition to these tragic practices and urge any and every action to reunite families and end the detention of children. Children do not immigrate, they flee. They deserve our unconditional care and compassion, nothing less.
