During the holiday season, we announced creation of the Duke Children’s Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center. The new center serves to integrate a full range of advanced clinical programs that will further advance clinical care for our patients across the continuum.

A patient-focused endeavor such as this requires a talented team positioned to lead us toward achieving our goal -- to become recognized as a Top 10 US News and World Report hospital for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery.  With this in mind, we are pleased to announce the appointments of Joseph W. Turek, MD, PhD, and Salim F. Idriss, MD, PhD, as Executive Co-Directors of the Heart Center, and Jessica Simo, MHA, as Director of Hospital-Based Heart Center Administration.  In partnership with the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center Executive Committee and related academic departmental practices, the first priority is to develop community partnerships and relationships, allowing expansion of our reach and to improve our pediatric heart service quality of care.

Salim F. Idriss, MD, PhD
As a skilled Pediatric Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, Dr. Idriss has developed meaningful strategic relationships across North Carolina, an area in which he will continue to focus in his new role. Dr. Idriss currently serves as Vice-Chief of Practice for Pediatric Cardiology, Director of Pediatric Electrophysiology, and Medical Director of the Pediatric Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs.

Joseph W. Turek, MD, PhD
For the past six years, Dr. Turek served on the faculty at the University of Iowa, where he led the congenital heart surgery program.  In August 2017, Dr. Turek rejoined Duke, where he completed his residency, as the Chief of Congenital Heart Surgery.

Jessica Simo, MHA
Since joining Duke Children’s in June 2014, Jessica has successfully led all Children’s hospital-based ambulatory operations.  She will continue serving in this leadership role while expanding her scope to assume administrative leadership of the hospital-based heart center functions.

Please join us in congratulating Joe, Salim and Jessica on their newly expanded roles within the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center.
