Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
Like many others, I was looking for a residency program that would give me the best possible education in three years along with the best possible quality of life. Concerning the former, I wanted a program that was ranked highly in many sub-specialties, was known for an emphasis in clinical and academic research, and would provide the patient volume to optimize my training. For quality of life, I wanted a program in the southeast or mid-Atlantic and a program where the residents seemed to really know each other outside of the hospital. Needless to say, I believe I have found all of these things and more at Duke.

About Duke University and Durham

What’s best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
The best thing that I have noticed about the Triangle so far is the amount of things to do for young people, particularly young professionals, and how each section of the Triangle supports the others. There is a great "college town" feel to Chapel Hill, along with a great food and nightlife scene in Durham, followed by bigger concerts and sporting events in Raleigh. There always seems to be some sort of festival or other community activity going on, and having three cities so close by gives many opportunity for weekend, or even weeknight, plans!

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
I would say go ahead and invest the 20 dollars and buy a Durham Bulls/Bull City hat or T-shirt, because everyone else has one, and it is easy to feel left out if you don't have one.

Personal interests

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work I enjoy many things, but I am first and foremost an avid sports fan. I love watching and going to Clemson football games (s/o to the 2016 and 2018 College Football National Champs!), and watching the NBA and NHL when it's not football season. I'm excited to learn what college basketball is all about! I also enjoy other outdoor activities including hiking, biking, and running. Last but not least, I enjoy trivia nights or just socializing with my friends.

What is something interesting/surprising about you?
Yes, I am actually related to the Abercrombie clothing company. (Ok no, not really, but everyone asks anyway.)
