Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
A place where you had exposure to lots of interesting "zebra" cases, but also had community hospital exposure so you could become pros at the common pediatric complaints. I was also looking for a program that was a tight-knit community, and definitely found that at Duke!

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
Great group of residents from varied backgrounds, compelling patients that represent a spectrum of medical complexity, and supportive staff and faculty who do everything possible to help us develop into more knowledgeable and confident doctors.

About Duke and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
With the Triangle you get 4 towns/cities with slightly different feels: Durham with fantastic food, bars, and compelling culture; Raleigh with the state capital and a traditional downtown; Chapel Hill with a college-town vibe; and Cary with suburban, family-focused feel. So you can live, and play, in whatever area matches your personality best, all within 3 hours from the beach and 3 hours from the mountains.

What advice would you give about moving to Durham?
Decide what type of lifestyle you want to have, because you can really have it all! Around Durham you have the options to live in the bustle of downtown, but North Carolina also has pretty affordable real estate and you can afford to live in a house with a yard in a more suburban setting if that is more your style. Also, get ready to eat a ton, because the Triangle area has some fantastic food!

Personal interests

What do you like to do outside of work?
Spending time with co-residents, friends outside of work, and family at restaurants, bars, concerts, broadways shows, and in travel. I also sing in a choir that performs with the NC Symphony, and love that I can continue singing and performing. But one of my favorite things is hanging out at home with my husband, dog, and cat!
