Reflections on the Duke program

What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a medium-sized program that had a healthy balance of inpatient and outpatient experiences. I wanted to have lots of support from the program leadership and my fellow residents. As far as location, I wanted to live somewhere not too far away from my parents that had a climate similar to what I'm used to in Louisiana and Texas, and had an ethnically diverse population.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The people are the greatest strength: I have been blown away by how generous and helpful everyone is, from the program leadership and my fellow residents to the nursing and ancillary health staff. It truly feels like I have been welcomed into a family. I also liked the idea of the every other night float schedule, and free parking is a nice perk.

About Duke and Durham

What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
After living in (very) rural Louisiana and then the giant city of Houston, Durham feels like the Goldilocks "just right" fit for me. It's big enough that there's always something to do, but not too big to be overwhelming. I love how there's no traffic and how almost all the roads are hilly & surrounded by an abundance of gorgeous trees. I also love the people: everyone I meet is very kind & friendly.

Personal interests

What do you like to do outside of work?
I have two cats (Uranium and Curie) that I love cuddling with after work. I also like reading for fun: murder mysteries, biographies, sci-fi/fantasy.

What is something interesting/surprising about you?
Although I don't like cooking and have no interesting in learning, my favorite show is "The Great British Bake-Off," and I could watch cooking videos on YouTube for hours.
