Reflections on the Duke program
What were you looking for in a residency program?
Most importantly I wanted a program where the residents were happy and felt supported, but also one that was challenging enough to position me well for the next phase of my career (whether that's fellowship or general pediatrics TBD). I was interested in a program that served a diverse population with a good balance of general medicine and subspecialty exposure.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
As trite as it may sound, the people truly are our greatest strength. As soon as I stepped into the interview dinner it was clear that the residents weren't just coworkers, they were close friends. Additionally, the program administration is amazing and really are all invested in our well-being. It's so important to me to have that type of relationship with my colleagues to celebrate with during the highs and to lean on during the lows. You will spend most of your time at work, and it's so fun when you love what you do AND who you work with.
About Duke and Durham
What's best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
There is something for everyone in the Triangle! Great food, breweries (or if you're like me, great wine), shopping, outdoors, live music, arts and culture, sporting events--you name it. The mountains and beach are also super driveable, if you're into those things.
What is something interesting/surprising about you?
I grew up in the south but I'm a New Yorker at heart and a big Yankees fan; my great-grandmother was Joe DiMaggio's kids' babysitter!
