Division of Quantitative Sciences

Division Overview

The Division of Quantitative Sciences in the Department of Pediatrics includes faculty with documented expertise in quantitative sciences such as biostatistics, epidemiology, econometrics, health services research, and pharmacology.  These faculty members are board-certified pediatricians with clinical skills in diverse areas and advanced degrees in quantitative methods. Faculty members have a primary appointment in a clinical division, reflecting individual clinical training and responsibilities.

The goals of the Division of Quantitative Sciences are to:

  • Support clinical, translational, and basic laboratory research in the Department of Pediatrics, and potentially, in other departments at Duke University Medical Center.

  • Provide support in the applications for extramural funding for the Department of Pediatrics including the development and writing of statistical analysis plans, data management strategies, and data analysis.

  • Provide support in the applications for extramural funding for the Department of Pediatrics by analyzing preliminary data for applications.

  • Enhance the education and mentoring of junior faculty and trainees with research interests in children's health.

To effectively achieve these goals, faculty members complement their own research programs by participating as collaborators on other grant applications and by providing statistical analysis for applications, research projects, and individual manuscripts. The Division supports the Pediatric Evidence-Based Medicine Conference, the Research Seminar Series for Residents, and participates in the core curriculum for the fellows in the Department of Pediatrics.

Faculty members in the Division of Quantitative Sciences work closely with the Duke Clinical Research Institute, the Duke Translational Medicine Institute, and federal agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the National Institutes of Health.
