Education
Medical training in the area of child abuse and neglect is
provided through one to four week clinical rotations for medical students,
residents and fellows in Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine and
Psychiatry at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. Child abuse training is also provided
through daily or weekly training sessions for DUMC and UNC nurses, SANE nurses,
nurse clinicians, physician extenders, clinical social workers, and
psychologists. On-going child abuse and neglect training is provided to
community agency members from Department of Social Services Child Protective
Services, Law Enforcement, and the Guardian ad Litem program. Physician and
medical student training includes participation in inpatient/ER consults,
precepted child abuse/neglect evaluations in the outpatient clinic setting, regularly
scheduled didactics at DUMC, multidisciplinary clinical case reviews, community
child abuse multi-agency review team meetings, and court cases of child
abuse/neglect in both district and superior court.
Additional training opportunities for local medical and
mental health providers are provided through the North Carolina Centers
Training Grant which provides up to three days of precepted training in child
abuse/neglect assessments at the Duke Child Abuse and Neglect Medical Evaluation
Clinic.
