Training Program in Biomedical Engineering

Research opportunities in this area use light which allows subsurfacing imaging at the micron level include:
  • Three dimensional imaging of cardiac morphology and development in the chick embryo (M. Kirby, J. Izatt).
  • Use of OCT in retinal imaging (J. Izatt)
  • Gastrointestinal imaging using OCT (J. Izatt)

Mentor

Joseph A. Izatt, Ph.D., Pratt School of Biomedical Engineering

Related Coursework

Several graduate-level courses in the Biomedical Engineering Department are required to obtain a quantitative understanding of optical coherence tomography in the context of modern biomedical imaging systems.
  • BME 233 "Modern Diagnostic Imaging Systems" provides an introduction to clinical biomedical imaging modalities and to quantitative assessment of image quality and lesion recognition.
  • BME 270"Introduction to Biomedical Optics" provides an introduction to theoretical models of light propagation in biological tissues and biophotonic instrument design.
  • BME 265.05 "Biomedical Optical Diagnostics" provides an introduction to optical microscopy and spectroscopy instrumentation and a detailed treatment of optical coherence tomography.
