Division of Medical Genetics

Philanthropy

The practice of Medical Genetics is a tremendously gratifying yet demanding discipline. As one of the nation’s leaders in this important medical discipline, Duke’s Division of Medical Genetics is providing state-of-the-art medical care to our patients with any variety of genetic diseases. Philanthropic support from both foundations and individuals—in gifts both large and small—play an essential role in fostering these efforts. Many of the children and adults we diagnose discover that many of their medical concerns can, at present, only be treated supportively, rather than cured. Our faculty and staff have dedicated their professional development to address this need. Currently, our division fosters training as well as clinical and basic research initiatives that will lead to cures for a number of disorders in dire need of such efforts.

What Your Support Can Do

Clinical and Basic Biomedical Research

The Duke Division of Medical Genetics pushes the envelope relative to the development of new therapies for genetic diseases that only a few years ago were thought to be untreatable. The efforts required to achieve these results are great, and biomedical research is costly. Individual projects can cost more than a million dollars, and the early, small-scale studies that could yield exciting discoveries—as well as translational research to turn them into promising new treatments—are usually not funded by federal support. Philanthropic support continues to be essential for further the development of the research that has already benefited so many people and offers the potential to benefit thousands more.

Patient Support

Medical Genetics patients and their families require a broad array of services to help them cope with the challenges associated with a genetic diagnosis. To meet those needs, we offer abroad array of genetic counseling services and extensive initiatives in patient and family education. These critical services are oftentimes not reimbursable by insurance companies or governmental agencies. Philanthropic gifts make it possible for us to provide all the services that will help ensure the best outcomes for patients and families dealing with genetic illnesses.
