Medical Student Elective

The course is designed to provide experience in diagnosis, interpretation of laboratory results, nature history and treatment of pediatric rheumatic diseases. Two weeks minimum, four weeks preferred.

Resident Elective

Residents rotate through DUMC clinics and wards to see inpatients on rheumatology service, and inpatient consults. They attend weekly clinical conference, biweekly radiology rounds, and monthly journal club. The aims of the rotation is to understand the differentials as children present with possible rheumatic diseases, be proficient in the musculoskeletal exam, understand treatments of rheumatic diseases, aims of therapy, role of physical and occupational therapy, complications of diseases, and treatments.

Fellowship Program Overview

The Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship is jointly supervised by faculty at Duke and the University of North Carolina. In the three-year program, the first year is clinical and the next two years are primarily research. The program offers many basic science opportunities both in laboratories related to rheumatology divisions and throughout the basic sciences. The Division of Rheumatology actively participate in clinical research. Didactic training in clinical research is available, including the Duke Clinical Scholars Program and the Master of Health Sciences in Clinical Leadership Program. Consistent with the requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics, the fellow is expected to complete a research project and prepare it for publication.
