Overview

Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics provides medical care to children with disabilities. The diagnoses most frequently treated are cerebral palsy, spina bifida, brain injury, Down syndrome, and autism. For each diagnostic group, studies have been undertaken over the years relevant to clinical management, to development of "secondary morbidities" and/or to outcomes. In addition, genetic studies related to etiology or severity of symptoms have been done with the Duke Center for Human Genetics in the areas of neural tube defects (spina bifida) and autism. Single hypothesis studies related to Apolipoprotein E genotypes have been done in adults with spinal cord injury and sensory neural hearing loss and children with traumatic brain injury.
